The ascension Baptist Church was founded by the late Rev. Carl L. Headen, who was led by God to first start a Christian Mission Outreach Ministry in the early days of 1976 at the North Englewood Civic Center. And, on February 2nd, 1976, he organized this Church under the Missionary Baptist Standards and Rules set forth by the Washington D.C. Baptist Ministers’ Conference. Nine members made up the new Church.

The Late Rev. Dr. John W. Johnson, former Pastor of First Baptist Church of Glenarden and Dr. J. Patrick Maloney, former Pastor of Kent Baptist Church, assisted Rev. Headen in organizing the Ascension Baptist Church. The Church was set apart and formally recognized in July 1976, at which time, eight more members joined making a grand total of 17. Those appointed to office were: Sister Rochell Headen, Pianist & Directress; Deacon George Riley, Head of Deacon Board & Treasurer; Sister Dorothy Thompson, Head Trustee; Missionary Patricia Williams, Church Clerk, and Dr. Joseph C. Paige, Director of Church School.

In 1980, Rev. Headen became seriously ill and departed this life on November 1st, 1981. At that time, Rev. Joseph Hall was appointed interim Pastor. Later that same year, Dr. Joseph E. Bradley, his wife Lucille and family, moved their membership from Kent Baptist to Ascension.

In July 1982, Rev. Wilbert Campbell, Jr. was elected as the new Pastor of Ascension. Dr. Bradley worked closely with Pastor Campbell as Sunday School Superintendent and Head of the Deacon Board. Dr. Bradley was called into the ministry and preached his initial sermon on March 4th, 1984.

Since 1982 Ascension has grown to approximately 55 members and has been blessed with the following nine Ministers and three Evangelists: Ministers Willie Cannady, Robert E. Baines, Calvin D. Lanier, and the late Bishop Charles E. Pinkard; Minister Robert Gaines, and the late Rev. W. C. Foster; and Ministers Robert Colbert, Barry Braan, and Ellis Mimms; and Evangelists Rudy Lanier, Dorothy Colbert and Lillian Gore. We pray that the Lord will help us to grow spiritually and numerically, so we can be of better service in winning souls for Christ.

The following services are being carried on at Ascension Baptist Church: Sunday Church School, Sunday Morning and Afternoon Worship Service, Holy Communion Service on first Sunday, Discipleship Training on Tuesday evening, Prayer Meeting and Bible Study on Wednesday evenings, Youth Service on second Sunday and special periodic service, including Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter Revivals, plus Vacation Bible School. In addition, Ascension is blessed to have the following singing aggregation: ABC Gospel Choir, Male Chorus, Carter Kids of Zion, Youth Under Construction Choir, Christ’s Anointed Praise and the C&V Spiritual Singers.

In 1993, Pastor Campbell led the Congregation to move from 4705 Dean Drive, Capital Heights, Maryland, to our present location at 3803 Regency Parkway, Suitland, Maryland, where God has blessed us with sufficient space for worshipping teaching and fellowshipping. Since 1997, our classrooms have been used by the Southern District Extension School of the United Baptist College and Seminary, under the leadership of Dr. Joseph E. Bradley, Dean, in providing accredited [formal] theological and Christian education.
